A very happy new year to all
Today we take a GCE reexamination for the following water subjects G for green water C for clear water and decide for our fish friends whether which benefits who and what First we take some revision before taking the exam. The subject on green water is discussed in greater details and an in depth study of it is essential before you pursue to master its management. GREEN WATER Planktonic algae are waterborne single-cell algae, most commonly referred to as Green Water. Planktonic algae (algae bloom) usually occurs as a result of increased levels of nutrients and carbon dioxide in pond water, combined with the energy of sunlight or artificially illuminated by pl lights or metal halides. Algae can be either beneficial or detrimental to a pond, depending on the owner’s viewpoint. First the benefits are discussed 1)Algae provide nutrients for newly hatched fry as it can provide an alternative food source for omnivorous and herbivorous fish, especially small fry from egglayers who may sometimes survive only on green water. 2) indirectly act as a color enhancer as they contain natural color enhancer like chlorophyll fucoxanthin, astaxanthin and other carotenoids. 3) zooplankton will also develop as second level in the food chain on which the fish feed not just fries These natural live feeds help develop the intense coloration desired . Phytoplankton(single cell algae)are to fish like krill to whale. They provide continuous feeding without much effort and browsing, thus ensure good growth and superb nutrition. 4)Good wen growth:Though not scientifically proven and substantiated ,however several bros swear by it .Documented through many first hand experience, perhaps there is some hidden ingredient that give that hood growth through some hormonal stimulation or otherwise which remain at the moment undiscovered. 5)Natural cleanser and Oxygen giver: The main benefit of algae is that it helps clean the water in the tank. Green algae is just like the higher plants, in that it uses organic wastes in the water and produces oxygen. It consumes all organic nutrients acting like natural scavengers and vacuum unwanted waste with resultant liberation of oxygen in normal respiration process. Detrimental effects and risks involved in Green water 1)Algae influence the water quality of the pond mainly by affecting the balance among dissolved oxygen, pH, carbon dioxide, and nutrients. During photosynthesis, algae produce oxygen, remove nutrients, and take up respired carbon dioxide from the fish . In heavily stocked ponds, the water becomes initially supersaturated with carbon dioxide. High levels of carbon dioxide can quickly depress the pH of the water to levels below seven if the operator is not careful to maintain proper alkalinity levels and adequate aeration for stripping. During active periods of photosynthesis (during daylight hours), algae can quickly strip the carbon dioxide out of the water, and pH levels can rise above nine in a matter of hours. Fish not acclimated to such sharp shifts may initially show signs of stress. 2)At night, both algae and fish consume oxygen from and exhale carbon dioxide into the system. Algae compete with the fish for available oxygen in the water. A potentially serious impact of an algae bloom is the risk of an “algae crash” triggered by temperature or barometric pressure. When an algae bloom collapses, dead algae cells settle to the bottom of the pond, adding to the decomposing sediment’s oxygen demand. If the crash is severe, the pond’s oxygen supply can be quickly depleted, endangering the fish unless backup aeration is available. Additionally, as the dead algae cells rupture, they can release organic nitrogen and phosphorous back into the water, adding to the system’s nutrient load. 3)algae blooms prevent viewing the fish.Perhaps this one of the most important reasons why hobbyist shun away from green water. All fishes are best appreciated in clean clear water not pea soup with minimal visibility.Furthermore it is difficult to convince your family members what you are brewing is beneficial,as it is unsightly and an eye sore in your living area, worse if you have several tanks of these sugar cane juice in your premises! 4)With poor visibility, sick and disease fish are hard to detect and monitoring of its well being are often compromised.Much too often condition are not recognized early to prevent unnecessary loss. 5)No room for error .Given the stringent requirements of producing green water in a balanced and dynamic, everchanging conditions, there is practically no room for miscalculation and error. Without any biological filter, the bioload ,like fish to pond ratio cannot be discounted frivolously .I for one really admire many bros here practicing these stringent measure to ensure optimal grooming of their pets 6)Cost.If you harness green water from our sun, it’s free but you need outdoor setting which many bros may not be able to accommodate in HDB dwelling. Then they turn to renting ponds outdoor to satisfy their indulgence jacking up additional cost. If you brew your green water indoor, then you run additional cost in setting up with pl lamps ,metal halides and additional electrical consumption(much to the displeasure of home minister if you have one) I’m not against green water setup but if you sit back and think about it, the only real problem that green water produces is an aesthetic one. The fish in your tank don't care one bit how green the water is! In fact, the subdued lighting in a romantic environment due to the green water blocking some of the light is probably appreciated by most fish. So we need to put this situation in a proper perspective. You may not need to score a distinction in the above subject but a basic understanding of its concept cannot be over- emphasized to prevent an early extinction of your pet fish .So do take this examination seriously . Ps :My advice; A level student can advance to green water management ,novice and O level please stick to clean and clear water first. Now the topic is opened for discussion REGARDS goldrush ![]() ![]() ![]() |
