Hello everybody,
I bought this ranchu three weeks ago.Its 3 inches long.
Hope to learn from your comments.
thanks
Hello,
This Ranchu looks good. From the top and from the side. I only think it needs a lot of food so that the belly becomes deeper when seen from the side. A nice big tail ! I hope to see a better top view photo to give more detailed comments. Do you know the origin of this Ranchu ?

I'm a newbie to topview ranchu, and IMO I don't think this is a topview ranchu. The scalings indicate it is chinese and is therefore a sideview ranchu. Nevertheless, the nice big tails is 4-pivoted which is one of the most sought-after kind. The last pic shows the shindachi is more than 45 degrees, which is good especially when the Ozuke connects at an acute angle, but the tails is too tall. If you observe, this ranchu may dive downwards when it tries to swim away quickly. The osa is quite messy (for a topview) but that's not relevant for a sideview. As a sideview ranchu, the body shape is not good as it is too long. At this young age, there's room for the wen and cheeks to develop, and if you feed and take good care of this chinese, it may, IMHO, turns out nicely as a sideview ranchu. The trick may be to flatten the horizontally suspended tails somewhat by keeping it in great depth and higher current tank, and pumping it to give it a full body.
... my 2 cents worth.
Few comments...
1) The topview shot is not optimal for assessment. It should be a direct-overhead shot.
2) For a 7.5 cm ranchu, it should look less well developed. Leads me to think this ranchu may be growth restricted(stunted).
3) Colour is too strong, head development too much for this size
4) Caudal peduncle not strong/thick enough
5) Reasonable tail structure, topline, markings
Cheers!
when i look at the pics of the ranchu, the first thing that cross my mind is.... the tail is too long. too wide and too long for that size of body.
nice tail, body abit short, headgrowth reasonable.. back abit thin, overall not bad for a thai topview ranchu..
do post a clear direct topview and sideview shot of the fish, thanks
Here are another two topview pic for your comments.
Thanks.
Thank you for the new photos. Now the fish actually looks too short. But I still love that tails.
Thank you very much for the extra photos. Yes, it is true that when seeing these photos, the body is too short. It is a pitty, because the tail, head and scales are beautiful. The caudal peduncle should also be much stronger.

Geert, I am not so sure about the tail. Isn't there a kink in the hard rays? Would this constitue a major flaw?
http://www.japanranchu.com has basic info on how to assess a ranchu...may be useful as reference for the hobbyist.
It's been six week since the fish was posted.
Six weeks is a relatively long period for a developing ranchu.
How about an update?
Ok, here is the updated pics.
But this time she brought along her boyfriend.
Looks like not much has changed. At least the size of her cheeks stay the same. Are you feeding it high protein food?
Her boyfriend, on the other hand, looks good. He deserves his own entry in the Academy! Please do so!
