No, normally I use oil/protein remover by AZOO to breakdown the oily-looking stuff on the surface....however, yet to apply on this tank as it is still in the initial stage.
Any particular reason for asking this question ?

These tanks are nice, however did u notice that there isn't any small tropical fish around. My personal preference will be seeing schools of small tropical fishes moving around the tank together in unison...

Posted by: mountain Tue, 03 Aug 2004 1:04 pm

guess one of the smoothing thing is to see the generated oxygen bubbles slowing rising in unison .. but i realise they are always small ... is it any possible to create BIG bubbles?? biggrin.gif tat would be fun ..

Yup,was told that plants produce oil(some sort). That we need surface skimmers to remove it.

Since you have used AZOO oil/protein remover I've got a couple of questions for you.

1.How long have you been using these products?
2.And if you would use these products in the long run?(would there be foreseeable problems?i.e using chemical to break down oil/protein.)

Thanks n Cheers

To answer your questions:
1. A couple of years.
2. So far no problem but bear in mind that only use it when necessary and not in periodical sense.

The reason why these oily substances gathered on the surface is because for planted tank, we will like to minimise surface movement to prevent unnecessary loss of CO2 which resulted in the above. The function of surface skimmer mainly provide a way to collect these oily substances into the filter. Another cheap way of getting rid of these is placed an oil absorbing paper on the surface for a while, then disposed it after that, this will also reduce some of these oily stuff.

Are we tuned in the same frequency ?
Not being longwinded, to clarify again, surface skimmer used in planted tank and protein skimmer used in marine tank are different thing altogether.
Surface skimmer provides an inlet for the filter at the surface, so that those oily substance can be filtered away.
For protein skimmer used in marine tank, uses air bubbles to propell salt water up to a chamber where excessive protein will be collected.

Hi bro LASERGUY,
your right,i drifted off for a moment,i meant surface skimmer.

If I'm not wrong, planted tank's choice of filtration is the canister system, and the surface skimmer is connected to its inlet. I want to know, out of curiosity, what's inside the canister that stores the sucked in oil inside the canister? unsure.gif

Posted by: HappyBuddha Tue, 12 Oct 2004 8:21 am

I wonder if we can have a planted goldfish tank where a standard tank is partitioned into two seperate tank in the middle. The rear half is the planted section while the front half is for goldfish. Should be quite song to enjoy both hobby at the same time.

Already have ~50 of them, hiding underneath the plant....

Posted by: mountain Tue, 04 Jan 2005 1:14 pm

but do you have to feed them like goldfish ?

i may try one out but worry about the logistic nightmare as compared to a baretank goldfish..

May be looks yellowish because all the green E tenelus at the tank bottom turned reddish/orangish due to high Fe nutrient...

Posted by: LASERGUY Thu, 16 Feb 2006 12:06 pm

Daily top-up required as cooling fan increases water evaporation rate (1 inch per day.)
Water change of 10~20% weekly or every fortnightly.....

Posted by: LASERGUY Thu, 14 Feb 2013 6:31 pm

Re-scaped my 3ft tank yet again before CNY 2013.
Only low maintenance plants, too busy and lazy.
