You have weird taste.I am quite familiar with 80s music yet have not heard these b4.
Can only guess the 3rd song by A Ha.
Posted by: desireless Mon, 12 Sep 2005 10:53 pm
This is no fun...
We should play something like what Jason Chow last time had on radio...
He would play some pah-liah 80's Eurobeat song then ask listeners to call in and complete the lyrics.. Really tough... coz some of the songs cannot find lyrics one.. Really good.. That was the only time I participate in such call in games

First song is from Silent Circle.. Their songs were popular in the 80's discoteques dance floor...
You should find the chorus very familiar

I also skipped the evolution of music in the 90's... switched to listening to chinese songs. Really cannot tahan the change in pop music.. most bands from the 80's changed their style to suit the trend. Think only Pet Shop Boys maintained a well balance keeping on to their style and moving on at the same time... But knowing that both of them are gays turned me away from them

But really.. Don't know if this is coincidence (same as TVR). I have been collection CDs for so long... Japanese release are always highest valued and most collectible
The Jap releases in the picture cost more than the rest and are most valued to collectors. The "Made In Japan" printed there entitled you to ask for double or more of those "Made In Germany" ones
I guess this is some culture SG ppl need to learn.. on why "Made In Japan" is always good.

Wah ... still got rediffusion .. I still remembered going to CC to watch tv till my uncle got the 1st set ... Telefunkant (forgotten how to spell liao) .. branded siah ...
Liu WenZheng period came out a lot of solid singers. Many songs we still can remember how to sing and actually some new generation also know.
Dong Tian Li de yi ba Huo ... Dong Nian ... Xiao Yu ... Wo Jia Zai Na Li
Then invaders of Brit Pop. And follow closely the CantoPop ... 80s hahaha

Among the 4... a-ha is the easiest to complete collection. PSB/DM simply have too many variations to their releases. I got scared looking at the items I missed out on them...
Madonna.. worse. Her rich fans simple like to trade with her things because rare ones (like Promo CDs) can always hit 1000USD over. (Her "Sex Book" is... must-get though
) Talking about her fans.. they are enough to invade SG 5 times over.
MT is by far my most favourite Eurobeat artiste. Although they were not really sucessful in making their comeback, I did support their sales
Too bad they finally announced ending MT.
Albums and compilations
Singles...
notice the 3 same CDS box sets? My mama called me "神经病"to buy 10 at that time.. (but I was tio tua big time that time

Aiyah Jean Yip is the sister of Dawn Yip.You can see both of them at a current Chinese programme pertaining to losing weight over at U channel. The husband of Jean yip who is a hair stylist is also featured in the show. Now a days all shows are tailored towards cosmetic and aesthetic affluence which media tries to fan these raging fire of desire to look and feel good. 叶佩芬. She was the winner of the olden mandarin version of "Singapore Idol" locally.. Or should called it SuperStar Mark I? It was called "斗歌竞艺". After that she cut a few songs... then didn't become famous.... Now she's helping out at Jean Yip and officially the spokeswoman. And she was one of the judges for Super Star:

Oh yeah... Square Rooms. Al Corley was an actor in a Gay show called "Dynasty"
... He had 2 other hits in Europe called "Cold Dresses" and "Land Of the Children" which of course didn't make it here to SG.
Kraftwerk... I only know this "Tour De France"
Nena made a comeback 2 years ago with a duet song "Anywhere" with KIM WILDE.. Woo how I love this chic. Kim Wilde did came back with this very much Madonna-styled song called "LOVED".
Posted by: desireless Thu, 15 Sep 2005 1:06 am
Talking about comebacks, these 3-4 years saw a lot of 80's artistes doing their comeback feats... but their campaign were rather unsuccessful
a-ha - came back after 7 yr of silence.. but with rather weak result.
Duran Duran - came back good (in their original 5). But quite silent recently.
Kylie - wow.. totally mad over this gal. I believe her breast cancer slowed down down her pace.
Kim Wilde - one good song and that's it.
Bananarama - you'll be surprised with their hit "Move In My Direction" this July.. unexpectedly superb
Matt Goss - from BROS... one lousy album last yr
Modern Talking - came back in 1998 with their comeback album titled "Back For Good"... but just last yr they announced separation and are now "Gone For Good"
Debbie Gibson - came back (as "Deborah Gibson") with 1 album.. and went missing again from the pop scene. She's doing broadway now
Tommy Page - came back silently under another record company. Had an album but it was not officially released due to copyrights issues.
Rick Astley - last album released in 2001. After that, he released several "Best Hits" to cheat money.
Out of so many 80's artistes/bands.. the only one that I missed most is "Johnny Hates Jazz". Never another band had so many hits in just one album.

We built this city - starship

Guess we can rename this "music" to "Reminiscent of the 80s". hahahaha ...
Interesting lyrics that not easy to forget ...
Oh yeah life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone - ?
Workin' 9 to 5, what a way to make a livin' - ?
Close your eyes, give me your hand, darling - ?
You can do magic , you can have anything that you desire - ?
and during that period ... Sylvester Stallone make war shows more exciting. thousands of bullet also can't kill a good great American hero.

I actually prefer the later albums, starting from Music of the Masses. The sound was mellower and had an edgier sound to it.
As for Soft Cell, I agree that most people would only have had heard of Tainted Love but the aqua man, aka Marc Almond, had a successful solo career and he is a brilliant song writer.

Baltimora died of AIDS in the 90's... silently until a fan pointed him out in the Orbituary.
FR David penned several hits made famous by other artistes. One of such was "Music". Not many knew it was written by him.
The Bangles are not one-hit wonder. They have hits like "Maniac Monday", "Walking Down your Street", "A Hazy Shade Of Winter", "Eternal Flame", "In Your Room", "If She Knew What She Wants", etc... until vocal Susanna Hoffs left them.

They openly said it was something about masturbation. And because of the gay theme in the video, it meant something even more....
So the song was BANNED in SG back in 1987 and early 90's. You can probably hear it on radio but on CD it is illegal.... Don't know what kind of rule is that.. The ban was lifted only in 1997(??).. which was about 10 years later.

Its the climax!!See beh tulan when that happens, but at least they dont do it to Hotel California.Cant imagine listening to Hotel California without the last electric guitar portion...........its like masturbating and unable to orgase.............
Hotel California only listen to the front guitar portion for audiophile testing. When they start to sing, i skip liao.
80s also featured many vocalists ... pure solid voice also. Dionne Warwick, Cher, Tina Turner, Kenny Rogers, longgan lychee (Lionel Richie) and his onglai long (All Night Long).
Where the heck is this band went to ... Fine Young Cannibals.

Actually the world changed in the 80s. Thru music they conveyed the strongest message of today. And also the 1st telecast of Music in TV in very early 80s, MTV ver 1 lah. Everything politics era change.

I guess the sophisication of music videos started in the early eighties. They were available earlier, but it was the Michael Jackson's Beat It and Thriller era that sees a massive change in the way music videos are produced.
I vaguely remember.....
Michael Jackson's superbly choreographed dances
The Police's black and white shoot of "every breath you take"
Aha's charcoal sketch music video
David Bowie's "China girl" shot in the nude by the beach
Duran Duran's "Girls on film" with many nude models!!
The King of Pop MJ surely got this title for a reason you just mentioned and it was the MTV of Thriller that started the whole chain reaction ...
And he made another superb change in the 90s with Black and White MTV.

MV is usually done with a very small budget with budding directors who like to strike out, if I'm not wrong Thriller tops the investment and a movie director was called in for this.
But in terms of sopfisication, the 80s have real funky music / dance movie like saturday night fever and fame propelled the music video to go big.

Yes that's true. It depends very much on the record company. So if one were to sign up with a small company (which is easier entry into the music scene), he will face low budget for video. Look at Kylie's "I Should Be So Lucky"... It was done on very tight budget. a-ha and Madonna on the other side signed up with big brothers like Warner Bros. Hence you can understanding why the video to a-ha's "Take On Me" (first video/singles) won so many awards (with the comic strip idea). And you'll never see low-budgetted Madonna's videos.
There were special cases too... For example Johnny Hates Jazz. They had 2 versions of the video to the songs "Shattered Dreams" and "I Don't Want To Be A Hero". At that time, Virgin Rec had tight budget for their MVs. After JHJ's record became multi-platinum (and $$ started rolling in), they re-did some of their videos.
To round up - It's all about $$.

Music and hi-fi goes hand in hand. When i was studying and had no money, I promised myself to own a set of hifi system when I started working, consisting of:
Nakamichi tuner and cassete deck
Lynn Sondek turntable
Marantz pre and power amplifiers
Infinity speakers
Jamo speaker stands
Monster cable speaker wires
Now that I am already working and can afford them, lost interest liao. All i have is a $499 JVC mini hi-fi cum VCD player.

If you liked it then get "Love over Gold" (1983).
Or the live double album "Alchemy" (1984).
Their lead singer Mark Knopfler, IMO, is one the the best guitarist. The classical guitar in the track 'private investigations' and the electric guitar in the track 'Sultans of swing ( live version from Alchemy)' ....................

They have more members than the 3 always featured on album covers. Last album was in 2001.. lousy leh. My most favourite song from them is "Heart Like A Wheel" though.
Oh yeah OMD... indeed their style is quite different from the rest of pop music. Their singles are very hard to come by.... so they are considered very rare

You guys obviously haven't heard nor seen (and I say this humbly) his version of American Pie, titled, The Saga Begins.
Using music from the song, he rewrote the lyrics to re-tell the entire story of Star Wars Ep 1: The Phantom Menace....and it was bloody good!
The chorus went like: My, my, this here Anakin guy, Maybe Vader later now he's just a small fry. He left his home, kissed his Mommy goodbye, saying 'Soon I'm gonna be a Je-di, soon I'm gonna be a Je-di'.
The video was fcuking funny; he was dressed up as Obi-Wan and he was playing the piano infront of an audience, which included Yoda!
You can only see the back view of Yoda but you cannot miss those ears.
You can catch the video here:

Scroll down and click on the Saga Begins link.
Enjoy!

Lois: I'm gonna go get some oranges, Stewie. Here, hold the rest of these bags for Mommy.
Stewie: Oh, what brilliant parenting, Lois, leave a tiny infant with a plastic bag. You know, I might just asphyxiate myself just to teach you a lesson.
(Stewie procedes to try and put the plastic bags over him several times but fails)
Stewie: Here I go! Just like that boy from INXS (Michael Hutchence, deceased lead singer from INXS)! I'm going to do it! I'm going to do it! (He cannot fit the bag over his head) BLAST! Good Lord, Lois, either I was a C-section or you're Wonder Woman.
Lois: Chris, would you run and get some milk? And make sure to take it from the back.
(A hand in black and white reaches out to Chris and pulls him through the freezer. Chris is now in the video for "Take On Me", by a-ha. Per the video, Chris is soon chased by motorcycle guys. Chris struggles to get out but finally escapes and comes out in the egg section)
Lois: Chris, where have you been?
Chris: I DON'T KNOW!

or go to:

Copy and paste the vieo link and save the file as something.flv
Then use a video converter to convert these flv files to something more commonly used like AVI or MPG:

I think Sabrina was produced by the same people who did Rick Astley and early-Kylie right? Stock, Aitken and Waterman...the beats are always the same. 4 x 4.
Anyone here into modern day electronica: Lamb, Massive Attack, Stereo Lab, Cocteau Twins?
Posted by: desireless Mon, 01 May 2006 2:35 am
Yes.. the 3 super mixer: Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman, who ran the studio called "PWL". Many artistes worked with them. apart from those you've mentioned, other big names like Bananarama, Jason Donovan, SAMANTHA FOX, Sinitta, Brother Beyond... and even Donna Summer (a couple of songs), Debbie Gibson (1 song: Anything Is Possbile), Dead Or Alive (You spin Me Round Like A Record), etc. And producing charity songs like "Do They Know It's Christmas Time" and "Ferry Cross The Mersey"
The trio are very talented mixers. The way they produce songs was very cool too. Artiste sings the song, and they will spend the remaining time putting in the music and walah.. you get megahits like Love In The First Degree, Together Forever, I Should be So Lucky, etc

Yes they were very big in Germany and the European countries. Most of their songs are very disco suited. Some local disco plays their songs in the early 80s, along with the more-popular Modern Talking. Low production budget hinders their stardom outside of Europe.
