How can you tell if the goldfish is male or female when they're still young?

I know that you could tell by the tubercles when they're older, but how about when they're young ?

And how do you know how old is the goldfish, by telling it from their size without taking off a scale and count the rings on the scale with a good mircoscope?

How big is 1 yr old goldfish? how about 2 yrs / 3 yrs old?

I am not really sure how to tell a goldfish's age. But one can certainly tell if a fish is stunted.

I do have similar problem with sexing fishes too. Some fishes I thought were male when they were very small grow up to be female tongue.gif

You can check the anal of the fishes to determine the sex differences. This is an important lesson I learnt from bro HB.

This is where the Anal Recognition method is better at, than the more commonly used "Chasing Stars" (tubercles)method.

By about 3 inch you should be able to tell for sure. You can tell even as early as when the fry start changing colour from their Baby Black.

I am trying to start my ranchu breeding program but I am unsure of how to properly sex them.

I have an adult ranchu which I thought was a female because it does not have white spots on its cheeks or fins. However it suddenly started nudging my ryukins and orandas so it's a male so I started buying another adult ranchu but I am confused as to how to pick a female ranchu. wacko.gif

Can someone please advise me??

Hi lnicky,
there are many ways to see the gender of goldfish, the two common ones are the white spots on the pectoral fin, and the anal vent... but there is also another way by touching the Anal fins, I saw a fish store owner determining the fish by touching the anal fins, and he told me if there is a rough feeling in the anal fins..then its a male..
