i think 1/2 a year back of so, SCDF already raised the issue of OHpumps that overheat and caught fire. most of those OHPumps dun't pass any test and easily overheat.

I believe most people had already switch over to submerged pumps for IOS tanks/OHFs. There are cooler as they stay submerged in water, and any electrical leak can be detected by performing the 2 finger test biggrin.gif

The problem with submerged filter is it can pose another kind of hazard. If it is of poor build quality it could leak electricity. HappyBuddha unfortunately own one made by Atman, a well recognized chinese brand name! So I guess to play it safe, we should spend more and buy quality products made by an international brand in countries where consumer takes the manufacturer to court over trivia matters. Whether it's submerged or external doesn't really matter.

I remember in the previous incident where a pump burned down a flat, it was made quite clear such equipments do not need approval from the authority. It's up to you to decide if you trust the brand.

I have not seen a spring passed pump in any LFS.

I remember it was suppose to start in January.

Anyway, unsafe products not equals to cheaper price. I can bet my top dollar that those that caught fire are not the original design from Japan (I think). I used to have a dyna made in Japan one for me to hot tested that fellow, there was a strong burning smell and it gave up. There was a short piece of wire connecting to the pump which simply melted.

So my conclusion is all those inferior clones never figured out why the use of the short piece of wire and the reason for sealing the unit with some materials which I can't figure out as well.

So brothers please check your equipment regularly. Pay special attention to clones. I'm sure HB is now happily using his eheim pump after his rude shock from the China made pump.

Hey bro, 220V will make you bounce back which break the grounding effect, so you will not BBQ your fish with your finger testing.
