Orandas - Always Got Problems... True Or Not? Options

Hi folks,

Juz like to poll all your folks esp those who keep many types of goldfishes...

Is Orandas the most problematic of the lot?


I am asking this due to the many I keep and it is always Orandas who always get sick 1st... I had them getting fungus, turning upside down, flotation control issue, having flukes, white spots... and they seem to be the 1st to get them as I keep some of the more common (cheap) ones in the same tank..

It is good in a "cruel" way as then it indicates to me that it is time to clean the tank, medicate or make some changes to correct this... very valuable lessons indeed but cruel... to a certain extent, I am a bit turned off to continue to keep Orandas...

If there are any Orandas expert here... luv to hear ur advice on water control, fishfeed, etc ......

There is no such thing as a "it is time to medicate a tank".Time to change water, yes.

Not true that orandas got problems.If water quality is no good, any fish will have problem.I have read from your recent posts that you change water very infrequently,that is likely the cause of your problems.

Maybe because orandas has very much larger fins and tails, it is easier for you to notice the problem such as torn fins/tails or blood streaks, which you fail to spot in a ranchu that has smaller tails and no dorsal fins!

Oranda is a BIG fish. What I mean is that comparing those common to most hobbyists, oranda is extremely demanding. Not just space, water quality must be tip top and oxygen demand is high. If u keep in a small tank, they won't make it.

u can say oranda is sensitive. a little bit out of control u see the fish sick, weaken and simply dead.

If keep them in good condition, u can see them grow beyond 12". Well, at least Tunghoi got Bruce to show.

Just to add that wat makes the oranda a more demanding breed is its sheer size and often its long veil tail .Being a long-tailed variety,circulation to the extremities are often compromised,as such the ends are easily affected by poor water condition and prone to bacterial finrot and erosion.Well the oranda may serve as a diagnostic tool (as u put it)to assess your water condition in your community tank,it is best kept by itself for optimal growth and appreciation.


There are not many BRUCES to show and achieve so far but certainly

many knocks and BRUISES received in tne making of one.....Enjoy

Yep, I hav not been active in maintainin my water quality n tat hav lead to some problems w esp my tank with my assorted GFs .... hehehehe...

think I shld either keep smaller GFs or limit the quantity in my darn small tank...

Keeping Goldfish is patient. I always like to add this Keeping Goldfish is patient and hardwork.

Just make sure your water quality is tip top condition and you will get rid of many problem.

I may not be one of those experts you wish to get some advices from, but I do keep hmmmmmm.........a moment please, need to count ....ach, 8 Orandas.

But they are as healthy as the others. I do once have a prob with one or two of them but I've learned that if the water is fine and there's nothing that could cause scratches to their "cap", they should be just fine.

I've also seen my friends Oranda weighing more than a kilo I suppose and to add the fact: he doesn't keep the fish in a huge tank. They may not grow as fast as they should be......but as long as the quality of the water is fine; they would grow huge being compare to other types of goldfish.
