Hi, all sifus, here is my tank setup. don't know how to capture just the photo. sorry, still learning.... http://www.eternalmax.com/downloads/rafflesgold1.wmv http://www.eternalmax.com/downloads/rafflesgold2.wmv
any comments? is it advisable for me to keep aquatic plants with my mixture of ranchus (2 x 4-5 inches), bubble-eyes, red-cap oranda and oranda,... total 11 of them. Will the aquatic plants affect the pH, KH, etc. These terms are very alien to me but somehow I learnt a lot from those fantastic articles posted by goldrush and others.

Wah piang, wait 3 minutes to see 10 sec clip.
Reminds me of my visits to porno websites.
I think the floating plants such as hyacinths or duckweeds are OK. But not advisable to mix your bubble eyes with others.

Dear yckhor
Glad that you enjoyed our postings and articles .Your mixed varieties in your "goldfish community tank" to the uninitiated may add dimension initially to your appreciation but sad to say some of these varieties may not be too compatible for the good of long term keeping.Delicate breed like bubble eyes often are compromsed by their bulkiness and dangling growths and will not be able to compete for food with better structured species.Oranda and ranchu seems good tankmates in the beginning but as each grow to reach their potential, perhaps oranda being endowed with a dorsal fin may require more height space as compared to ranchus. But again, some may just keep these together to add to their varied taste in the given space and who are we to say if you thoroughly enjoy their company
Cheers

hahahaha ... u will be surprise that bubble eyes are faster eater than ranchu or oranda.

Goldrush, I really appreciate your view on this. The bubble eyes belong to my daughter (two and half years old) who happens to share my tub . Agreed, speed & size does matter in deciding who gets the food. Matrix proven his point as well, bubble eyes usually are the one that had the first bite of everything I throw into the tub. But ranchus, due to its size, albeit a bit slow, will ram the party and get its share as well.
I was a bit worried about overcrowding the tub with too many goldfishes. In fact, I was caught by surprise this evening that the plant was growing so fast (had a 2-days break in Cherating, Kuantan) covering almost half of the tub & growing … caused by overfeeding … my father in-law took care of the fishes while I am away, guess he overfed them … and water turns murky. I am still very confused over the pH, KH, issue, well, will revisit those articles posted again…. Nevertheless, kudos to all the EXCELLENCE articles posted in this forum, still the best available in the Internet after scouting the net for the past few months and visited so many bookstores in search of a technically sound book on Goldfish but none can be found.

it's a good sign to see murky water than dun see. at least you know it's time to do something than assuming no action needed. dun worry about all those technical terms. once u got hold on how to keep the fish alive, then move back to understand these terms.
do watch the growth rate on all the fishes. bubbles has faster growth rate than the rest. likely u got to remove them to another tub before the rest of the fishes weaken.

I did a complete WC today, simply cannot stand the murky water. I filled up a toyogo white colour plastic box with the water from the black colour tub. To my surprise, the water actually shown tinted green, not dark green, unlike the green water cultivated by HappyBudda in his article. I think it is probably green water, so I kept 10% of it as seed, change the water, put back all the plants, and the assummingly green water seed too... fishes looks happy and once completed the WC, was eagerly looking for food once my daughter stand near the tub...
I got some questions pertaining to aquarium, planning to get one soon for the living room.
1. for a 5' x 2' x 2' tank, what is the correct water depth to house goldfishes? was told not too deep as goldfish prefers shallow water. Will it look weird for a 2' depth tank but 8" of water?
2. Do we need water chiller? Was told by so-called LFS goldfish expert (some reservations until I hear it from the sifus here) that it is vital to keep the water temperature low (26 degree c) to maintain the colour of goldfish, actually seen a 2' depth tank with water chiller running...
more questions to come....

Nice that kids love the work. Funny, u got plants and filter ??? if it's green, then u got a very strong light system ... or near balcony with direct sunlight ?

It's okay. Dun worry about 2' depth. as long as u can tahan such large water change ... kekekeke

Up to you liao. If u wanna invest in a chiller, by all means. But running the chiller is not cheap with our type of weather.
Posted by: CP Tue, 03 May 2005 11:03 pm
Mr Khor, Maybe you shd start another thread for your queries.
Yes, 8" of water in 5x2x2 tank sure looks weird, but since you are not keeping TV ranchus do not worry about the depth.I keep mine in 22" of water (ryukins and SVs), no problems. And in some natural ponds the water depth can be a few feet deep.
I had even tried my unwanted cheap TV ranchus in my friends 6ft koi pond, no problems! (No problems surviving, but it sure aint the way to groom them).
As for chiller,I dont see the need for it, our indoor tank temperature is about 24 to 26 C anyway.I have only seen chillers being used in marine tanks and koi ponds, not goldfish tanks.

dear sifus, thank you for your kind comments.
yes... my tub is at the backyard of my house (south face north). so, direct sunlight in the morning from east but shaded in the afternoon due to a bamboo curtain that I setup above the tank, I don't want to cook my goldfishes... but surprisingly, the water temperature always feel cool.... at least compared to my tap water... ok... thermometer on the shopping list..
1. ok then. 2' depth tank confirmed. water bill is still affordable in KL
2. but, will chiller help to improve the colour of goldfish? or at least maintain it in the house where no direct sunlight?
also, I think I am keeping SV ranchus... actually not very sure.. did follow the guideline posted in some articles here... should be SV. It is actually imported from China... TongGoon, GuangChou. just love the way it swims....

If u go china next time, visit the farms. some of the china farm sites or even tunghoi vcd also show their farms. Where got fish cook from sun light. Common sense please. U think the china farm use something to cover their few kilometers ponds or not leh.
your tank is big enough, so just be sure to know anything that can conduct more heat into the water than worry about the sun.
Posted by: yckhor Sun, 08 May 2005 9:21 pm
dear matrix,
well, not actually direct sunlight now, added a bamboo blind hanging few feets above, so, shielded from direct sunlight. will keep a close watch on water temp.

As promised...
This is my 4-ft tank now. To take the pictures, I have to clear front side of the tank. I left out one portion so you see how fast the algae grows in 1 week. The fishes like to eat the algae from the wall, so I have to corner off one part of the tank to preserve the algae.
The long fluffy wall algae. Notice my water is very dirty with debris floating around. This is due to me not using mechanical filter and the sponge filters are not fast enough to work on the poos. But the nitrogen cycle is still working perfectly.

desireless, Did you measure the temp of the water? I tried having more PL lights for my tank and realized that temp went as high as > 34C... especially in the day time. Not sure will there be any harm if temp goes too high

It is usually 29oC. At most 30. 34 is ok too as long as the temp swing for your tank is gradual, such that it won't stress your fish. Chiller is totally unnecessary.
I don't trim the algae. I cleared the front part to allow taking photo and video. Other than that I usually leave it as it is. My tank is never scenic
I stopped at 3 points: 1) Never trim. Notice it is very very "bushy" as it is near light source. The long fluffy algae looks like tentacles and swings with the water. 2) Never trim. Not so bushy as it always gets eaten. Can notice the algae also swings with the water flow. 3) Newly-grown for 1 week plus. Notice the new "thin fine hair"
PS: Ya, I know it sounds lewd... but how else can I explain this?

It has been almost a year since I last showed by 50 fishes tank (post#21). Now is time to update my tank...manage to reduce the stocks to close to 40 fishes (after some have pass on and some I have culled). Most of the fishes have grown (see whether you still can recognize them ) ). The problem I am facing now is I am running out of space
Here are some of the closed up shots of the fishes:-

No sunlight. Just strong PL or T5 should do the job. This is green algae, not green water.

Nice brew ! But I am unable to advise on maintaining green water during winter (ie not sure whether its possible) as our climate here is hot and sunny all year round.

my tank at present, gold fish have been in this for decades (the tank is at least 25yrs old, along with most of the orniments that came with it), my girl friends fam were going to toss it, what better excuse to get some fish of my own, plus the one that came with it
I want to show you a more actual video made on the 28th of november. I have made several changes inside the tank as moving out some pieces of wood, rocks, ect and move the rest of the things just to the middle of the tank leaving all the space for my golds!!!

I will do away with all the decoratives, goldfishes itself are beauties alone.

Yeah I keep bare tanks! I tried to decorate once before and my goldies would sometimes get scratched especially my black ranchu. Im working on a DIY trickle wet dry filter so there will be nothing in the tank to utilize the space in the tank not to mention the clean look! This is my newest tank it is a 46 gal bow front. Bought it for $75 bucks what a deal!
