In order to maximise the space for a bigger pond, I have to shift the filteration system to the sunken planter box near the main pond. Wonder can the filteration system works at a lower level then the main pond? Attached is a simple plan view.

Goldrush, can you share the design of your 8 ton filteration. It would be very helpful to learn how it works.

Can but the outlet from the main pond should be from the top not the bottom. The reason is to prevent the pond water draining into the filter when the pump fails as what Cyber mentioned.

Alternatively you can still keep the outlet at the bottom, but have a compartment separating the outlet from the main pond. The water from the main pond will then overflow into this oulet compartment. In my opinion this overflow system is better as it cleanses the top layer of of your pond water however the disadvantage is sometimes the feeds (floating pellets) will be drained into the compartment before your kois can consume them.

Think I gotta start charging consultation fees.............

draining from the top will not remove the rubbish that will be collected in an outdoor pond..
positioning of drainage and size of drainage is important as well

Outlet on top will solve the overflow problem but will not be an efficient filteration as far as koi pond is concern.

As for the 2nd option, can consider further but need to further improved so that the bottom of the pond will be cleaned as well.

Btw, how much is your consultant fee? tongue.gif Not too high hor, 小弟 need some money left to buy koi leh.
