To show or not to show, that’s today’s question………………..

For most die hard devotees the long waited event is about to dawn.Tis the time for hobbyist to gather to see the latest equipments and fishes for sale and even take advantage of special prices to stock up food, gadgets and that elusive fish they have yearned to own.For others it has to be more important event not to be missed. The exhibitors chance upon this event to test and show their best fish nurtured over periods of months to compete against one another for that elusive crown.

As with all hobbies and indulgence,we all started as novices, encountering setbacks along the way, lost interest in some but for others, their unyielding perseverance lead to better understanding and their thirst for greater achievment propels them to seek recognition for their hobby. As serious hobbyist embark upon this learning curve, they become aware that they are not alone in this craze. Many join clubs enter forum, seeking out any solution to their keeping. Many of us go as visitors to a show. Some join the fun and in time become exhibitors themselves completing the circle of learning with the end result of probably not just looking at ranchu but actually participating themselves!
So to all those RG members who are competing in this week end show…….

.A VERY GOOD LUCK and do us proud

I'm not too sure whether got sales or not as this is our first national ranchu show. Most shows that I have attended over the years have some form of exhibitors of products and fishes. So correct me if I'm wrong

On that nostalgic note perhaps,my last active goldfish competition was sometime in 1984 and 1985 era where there was not much individual participation then Those were the time I had to face LFS that brought in good grades fish like Red Sea,Swee Seng.Blue Sea ,Rainbow and Empress Aquarium. Those days the show were more catered for the LFS to market their fish rather than hobbyists competing against each other. Those trophies that I had won are now worthless ornaments that sit at a deserted corner gathering dust . I hope this time round I'll be able to see more hobbyist participation and perhaps a hobbyist clinching the coveted prize.
Wo yi jing dui chu jiang hu le.So I'll be there just as a spectator only

regards

On this topic of showbusiness, allow me to pen my thoughs on the level of the playing field, the different expectations, aims, purpose, satisfaction and achievements:

We used to have annual koi competitions. It was said that the grand champion for next year's competition is already pre-determined this year. All you need is $$$.So what is it that I am driving at?Let us take a look at this weekend's competition, the participants:

1)LFS who brings in fishes specially for the competition.
2)Rich hobbyists who purchase 'show class' specially for the competition.
3)Hobbyists who participates from his collection, like me. biggrin.gif
4)Very dedicated hobbyists who sends in the fish that he breeds,ie not purchased.

So is the level of playing field even? The answer is obvious. Its more difficult for you to win as you go down the list.

But who has more satisfaction?I would think that the lesser you spend on a fish, the more your satisfaction if it wins.

If you can spot a $5 fish in a LFS then groom it to be a winner(no need to be champion, consolation will do),the feeling is like attaining Nirvana.

And if you send in a fish that you bred it by yourself (hints, bro Goldrush, hints) and it wins, it sure feels better than orgasm.

Cat 1 - no choice. Every business wants something. If I am a lfs or dealer, I also want to ensure i have a certain level of competency and resources so to enable my business. Even so for individuals ... as in Cat 2 ..

Cat 2 - not necessary rich individuals lah. When comes to such competition, who can control. Be it this individual pick the fish himself or the dealer in Cat 1 pick for him, it's still a certain level of understanding and also wants something out of the money. But who cares. I knew some individuals that paid nuclear pricing for fish which are champions in earlier show but yet cannot win in other events.

Cat 3 and Cat 4 I would lump as 1 cat. No matter what, in our local context, there ain't many breeders in goldfish. And to obtain a good line of fish or even just to grow them. We do not have the resources, well unless rich enough to have a backyard delicated to do so. Not in our hdb flat definitely. It will be a long long long long while before we can even form a breeders' class competition, as this takes a lot of integrity and pride in their line.

A portion of Cat 2 can even classified into Cat 3. Some might buy show class fish and groom further. Some buy young fish and make things happen. As a consumer, we sit in the middle of the import/export market to siphone off any good reasonable fish.

When comes to competition, really, there is no need to bother about who is who. The judges do not look at the depth of your pocket or how u have kept the fish or even bother about who breed the fish, it is the fish that do all the talking; swimming.

Like you have mentioned, for individuals that won any form of prizes, then it is up to this individual/business objectives on what he wants - fame, pride, money, show off, babes ...

Nothing new to this aquatic hobby/business ...
