Full Version: About Mealworms...

Mealworms are on sale at many LFS, and my curiosity over why no goldfish keepers I know of feed them to their fishes got me decided to find the answer.

For one month, I fed two of my ranchus nothing but live mealworms. ohmy.gif I knew a variety of food is preferred but for this experiment I want to know the result clearly.

The ranchus didn't eat them at first, but having been starved for 2 days they went ahead and tasted the worms eventually . I'd tell you my ranchus loved the mealworms after they tasted it.

I didn't kill the worms before feeding them against the advice of someone who suggested the legs/claws could punture goldfish's digestive track. Nah... the ranchus has no problem eating the live worms; the worms are dead the moment my ranchus munch on them.

I can see empty shells floating on the tub's surface but otherwise the digested mealworms probably didn't pollute the water as badly as pelleted food.

Throughout this period the ranchus behaved normally. They didn't become restless or anything like dat.

Oh oh... and the poos are short, chunky but WHITE! rofl2.gif

So why did I stop? thinking.gif

The mealworm is a lousy source of proteins! mad.gif Both ranchus' cheeks and headgrowth shrunk noticeably after one month on mealworms.

Wasted time (and money.)

Tubiflex worm is definitely good.
Wens/growth/colour --> 10/10.

But due to the parasites and disease it carries I have stopped now...

What is mealworms?I thot you are refering to live tubifex but was stumped by 'legs/claws'
HappyBuddha
I don't have any pics... but mealworms is known in hokkien "loh di tung" (bread worms.) When you go to LFS that sells live feed, you'll recognize tubifex and bloodworms for sure. So the other type of worms in faded yellowish white colour is mealworms, and they are usually in a container with old bread crumbs plus saw dust like poos on the floor. $1 get you a small chinese tea cup worth. The interesting thing about them is you can keep them alive for months so long as you leave some food for them, ie, breads. There's no need to supply them drinking water. So I was hoping mealworms can be a substitude for tubifex due to their long "shelf" life. sad.gif

For the record and in case it's on someone's mind, my 5 inches ranchu can take in 3-4 mealworms on one mouthfull. tongue.gif The one chinese tea cup worth lasted 3-4 days for 2 ranchus at best.... so I wasn't underfeeding my fishes resulting in their protein deficiency hor.

Ohh...Mealworms I dont know,loh ti dang I do.
People buy to feed arowana.Must have burnt a hole in your pocket. wink.gif

hello bros

For detailed culture and analysis of mealworm kindly refer to the thread attached.
Beware that mealworm are not worms forever but are the larvae of a kind of beetles, details and pictures are very well documented in
the thread:

http://www.dbs.nus.edu.sg/research/fish/livefood/mealwm.html

hope that everyone is enlighten

To further add

Look at the nutitional analysis of the pupae of mealworms. It comprises of 48.31% of protein ,40.46% of FAT???????? mad.gif mad.gif mad.gif And 2.92% ash and 8.31% NFE(In animal nutrition analysis, NITROGEN-FREE EXTRACT (NFE):
NFE supposedly represents the soluble carbohydrate of the feed, such as starch and sugar. Crude fiber represents insoluble carbohydrate.
Mealworms are highly nutritious but also highly fattening so given that the above analysis holds true, your godlfish may encounter health problems if it fed on an exclusive meal of mealworms for prolong periods. So pls spare a thought for their well being.Thxs

for this one mth i feed mp in the morning and nite. varied diet 2-3 time of mp a day and 3 times of hikari lionhead pellet. As i mentioned, one mth before i introduce mp, diet is mainly lionhead pellets but the growth is really not significant at all.

all parameters are constant from day one.

HmMmMM... let me go ponder about it biggrin.gif

do you keep record of your fish with photos to show us the effect of using market prawn ?

are you still using right now ? is there a possibility of you showing the photo of your present fish after the prolong period of exposing to market prawn diet ?

I have a feeling you are doing a great experiment of alternative food for many hobbyists.

Yr chinese powderful? Can help to translate that book or not? I can lend it to u. There are some chapters which are very interesting, like

1) How to make a fish grow faster,
2) How to make a fish color more vibrant
3) How to make a fish live a longer life etc...

But dunno whether those are loads of bullshit.
