Never use before but only hearsay....not yet popular with domestic hobbyist, only commercial fish farming.
Function the same as UV sterilizer, kill bacteria and parasites...use with air pump to ozonize the air going through and pump into the water...need to have on - off control, cannot leave it on for too long, as fish will loss appetite smile.gif

Difficult to use in fresh water tanks. The safest thing is to not run it directly into the tank, so an external reactor is needed, but few are available for freshwater as ozone is designed to be used with protein skimmers (which acts as the reactor) on salt water tanks. Unfortunately protein skimmers don't work on fresh water.

Protein skimmers also use a venturi valve to suck air (and the ozone) into its water column, so again you'll need an extra piece of equipment for freshwater tanks, which is an air pump to push the ozone through (where the venturi does the reverse and sucks it through). You'll also need an air-dryer unit after the air pump as ozone generators don't work properly with humid air. It has to be very dry air.

And then finally you'll need a very expensive ORP monitor/controller to monitor the effectiveness of the ozone and to switch the generator off if it's getting too much otherwise you'll kill everything in your tank from bacteria to fish.

You'll also need good ventilation if anything goes wrong and it starts leaking into the atmosphere. Apart from a smell like a burning toy electric motor, the first noticeable sign there may a leak if you can't smell it is if you start having sharp headaches.

I actually have the whole set up, but have never used it because I decided it was too much trouble. A UV steriliser is much simpler and safer.
