I was watching that match and was as surprised as the commentator on why our player had played without a coach. It is the first time I see a table tennis match with a player not having a coach by his side (Of course, for the match between Wang Nan and Zhang Yining, they both have the same coach, so no coach is required during their battle).

Imagine you are Gao Ning, having prepared 4 yrs for the Olympics only to fall in the hands of a lesser seeded opponent. And it is not because you are lousy but rather, coach is not there to offer tactical advices. 5 coaches were available then. 4 were sent to prepare for 2 women's match players (happening later in the evening) and only 1 sent to cover for 2 men's players. There is obviously a mismanagement on the manager's part and the sack is a sound decision.
