Alrighty guys, here's the skinny...

I've just started breeding fish that take greenwater as their initial food - namely coldwater fish, such as shiners, minnows, and other cyps. My question to you is how to brew it in small batches. I have canning jars and wine bottles, as well as a couple plastic (1 US gal) pretzel jugs, and all have lids/corks, so that is no big deal.

The reason I ask is that every post I have found about starting a greenwater culture regards using fish to start the culture, but I have no fish that are hardy or small enough to stand the horrible conditions that would initially be in the jars. The only thing I could think of would be feeder guppies. Anyway, is there a fishless way to get a greenwater culture?

Also, My lighting is not all that great (i.e. the most wpg is 5wpg, and that is compact flourescent)...could I just stick it in a window? I'm in an apartment in Indiana, and my windows face South and West, so it would be afternoon light at best. Any suggestions?

Thanks again...
