i was reading a thread on sump tank vs IOF tank.

is sump tank ideal for goldfish? maintenance seem simpler and filtration change and medication could be added quite simply with sump tank, any one has one and can share some experience on sump tank?

Here are my two cents worth.

I don't own a sump tank but I think I know how it works.

Actually, if you understand how bio filtration works, all filteration system is the same (except for perhaps the FSB filter and the tricker tower). Water gets pumped, sucked, dropped into mechanical filtration first. Then it goes through ceramic/sinter glass media for bio filtration. After that stage, filtered water comes back out by force (IOS, sump and canister) or gravity (OHF). In between there's some sort of fine wools/sponge to trap and "polish" the water.

To me a sump is like an IOS placed underneath the tank. A OHF is a IOS placed above. A canister is roughly like a sealed IOS.

I don't like OHF becoz it's unsighty. Most OHF also does not allow me to install a rain bar to aerate and reduce water current. A canister is great but frequently disposal of trapped poos is a hassle. IOS is nice but takes up swimming space especially for a small tank.

I don't and probably won't go for a sump because I don't like to squat! biggrin.gif Depending on its design, you may not be able to place it on a sideboard you already own unless you drill a hole to allow the piping to go through. I can grow plants inside my IOS compartment but a sump is a dark place.

With modern sinter glass, do we really need that much space a sump tank has to house filtration media anymore?

i call one tank maker to my hse from the tanksetup thread to assess to see if mine can be converted to sump.

IOS to clamp now to do maintenance and with increasing shit load, the BB may not cope with the water "purification" process.

Afternote: he came and proposed to me how i could beautify my existing tank cabinet. i just wonder how much would it be????

If your BB cannot cope, there is 2 reason .. u doing it wrong, or your Bio-load is too high.. laugh.gif u buy too much fish liao .. leave some for me

I have a sump tank for my rykins....

IMO, very very good for fish with lots of shits..kekkekekkekkee

water always very clear, can put in tons of CR, sponge and wool... when dirty can see easily and wash. Cycle tanks very fast. Can keep more fishes per sqft of water.

Good for fishes that can take higher water level.... for ranchu, I have yet to find one that are 1ft height .. unless I customise of course..

I must be missing something or my IOS is different from the norm? I find cleaning the wet compartment relatively easy. Just remove the sponge, take the net basket of media out, rinse rinse, done.

One thing I do notice about other's IOS. They use wools. Now... wool ain't tight fitting especially since they tend to shrink after one wash. My sponge I cut them to fit perfectly and large particles cannot leak through. My bio media is thus relatively free of particles.

Show us the tank and cabinet. Maybe we can give you some ideas how to beautify it.

You didn't mention if they can modify your existing bare tank to allow overflowing. Are they able to do that for you?

my tank

can't modify existing baretank. the tank has some inherent problem which i notice. while the water is clean, i can't seem to clear he by products.

bro happybudda,
could u take a full picture of yr tank and the media basket u mentioned? i m curious how it look like

there are one schematic and one actual.
i know it is not ideal for goldfish setup....

Cool hor.

Long story short. Allan paid $10 for it at Simon Road.

My daughter-in-law gave it to me for free.

She shops at IKEA kitchen utility section (some months ago) for less than $5!

Simon Road put a Japanese Mat in it... which I doubt works well as a filter. I, being the smart one, put a sponge filter in it.

The standard guppy brand sponge filter fits perfectly with about 3-5 mm gap. The bottom of the can has holes too which I use a thin piece of wool to seal up. The now closed bottom aluminium can can collects debris well. biggrin.gif

It's quite nice to have. My fishy can't nip on the sponge filter anymore, and it gives the tank a more stylish look. no.gif

Aluminium will not cause any chemical reaction in the tank, I hope. unsure.gif

neat....

notice u have bubbles raining down at the backend of the tank.
is this push by the circulating pump and this is the clean , recycled water back to the tank?

seem like yr chamber is not fully filled with water? u can put some more bioballs to groom some more BB.

i tot u still could cover yr filter media. will look better since yr tank is alr black.

very neat indeed, i had one of these tin cans i used to place all my utensils ...
guess they are right, u are not only handsome, u are also damn smart. beg2.gif

so does placing the sponge filter kick start the bb growth in the IOS faster ?? i guess if you could remember, i had to reboot once awhile ago, and i lamented that i had to use a commercial product (someone said i am pouring dead bugs into my water cry.gif ) because i can't bare to let the process start slowly by itself.

That's what my grand daughter says to me the 1st time she saw my stylo milo aluminium can filter - mummy dries fork and spoon in it. My face was like that blush.gif Lucky I never bluff her it's some sort of super high-tech filter. biggrin.gif

Kekeke. You forgotten what we have to say about those zeolite you were using. laugh.gif

Unfortunately I use the the old sponge filters and sinter glass from my canister to cycle the new tank. It took about 2 days to cycle it. biggrin.gif

But I'm getting impressively fast cycling rate for a my QT tank whenever I set it up from scratch with a sponge filter. 1 week tops.

G-String .. Tia dio bo!! cycle with sponge for your new tank wink.gif

actually .. hmm .. where are those zeolite pebbles .. .. aiyo!! in my flowerpot.. happydance.gif

Hey that's a nice looking setup.

I'm very curious how it looks like inside. Could I trouble you to take another pic with all the doors opened? I especially want to see the two doors covering the tank itself.

Thanks.

sorrie for the late reply

i was told this is patented. so i am not too sure i will infringe anything if i go further to show this internal setup in public domain.

unlikely i could seek permission as contractor & me got dispute bec of design.

otherwise why would i want to change it......
