this "thing" was talked abt, wondered abt by some chaps.

wat is it. where does it come from. Is it any harm?

Its Ivory in color, abt 1mm by 1mm in size, and its hard enuff that i can't break it.

some of us will see them in the tank floor.

sorrie abt the pic, lousy viewcam, give me 2 years to save up for my Canon EOS D-series.

Can't be dropped scales if they are only 1 mm in size.

I have them on my tank's floor too -- they are chipped off sinster glass. ohmy.gif
mountain
we ruled out dropped scales, pearls from pearl scale, can't be chipped off sinster glass, i dun't have them. i took these 2 pieces from my 2ft tank.

some of the ideas that pop by are
1) broken shells from the salts we used
2) some unwanted things in the pellets they eat
3) unabsorbable stuff the fish spit out
4) some unwanted things in the Frozen Blood worms

errr guys me too.i suspect it came from a packet of salt.it happened after i add them.how about u guys.

I've that things now & then on my tank floor as well, curious at first but I've since concluded it to be goldfish teeth since goldfish change their teeth regularly. funny but thats my guess.

goldfish got teeth meh ?

Me too! Saw that a few times in my tank. I at first thought it is the silicone gel dropping off. Then I press it and it feels dam hard like stone. Some kind of bone. Maybe Max is correct to say it is the teeth.

got ah.. goldfish got teeth le biggrin.gif
Absolute Ranchu
I vote for things in the salt. The idea of Dracu-chu or Ranchula is too scary for my taste. happydance.gif

thks bro Absolute,i suspect it because the first n only time it occurred was when i added salt from a new packing.bro HB can i post the brand or is it infringing something.???

Mentioning brand name is perfectly fine. We do it all the time.... Hikari Lionhead, Eheim filter etc. wink.gif

I use fine salt for my tank and usually dissolve the salt before I add in my fishes. So it is unlikely that it is salt. yes.gif
mrchoco
dun think it is salt.
i dun put salt in my main tank and they are still there.

It's during water change that I found these too. It's very hard and white just like teeth. I belive it's the goldfish teeth. I'm keeping ranchus only leh. After spawning, can see 1-2 at the bottom of the tank too. Can experts verify that?

Goldfish's "teeth"!

Copied from here

"Goldfish do not have nice teeth like the ones you and I have in our mouths,
but they do have small bony tooth-like structures fused to their jaws,
pharynx (works to grind up the food before entering the esophagus), and
gill rakers (bony structures next to the gills that help to catch food that
comes through the mouth) which serve similar functions."

So I guess if you stick your finger deep into to reach the goldfish's throat, they CAN bite you. biggrin.gif

I'm not suggesting those white thingy are teeth that dropped out... what they are is still a mystery to me.

Look moutain, if you close this topic now you will forever be kept in the dark.

Let me share with you an extract from this book titled Fancy Goldfish. There is a small paragraph on page 105 and it goes like this,

'Goldfish don't have teeth embedded in thier jaw as some fish do, but they have what are called pharyngeal teeth situated far back in the mouth. these teeth are shed & replaced throughout the life of the Goldfish'.

It can't be salt becos I don't use them at all, yet.....
